Thailand, unlike China, claims to be a democracy. But as in China, cyberspace has become a battleground between free speech and censorship. Online speech has been freer than Thailand’s supine news media. But censors are working overtime. Since March 2008 the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MICT) has blocked 8,300 website pages on lèse majesté grounds. Thailand’s police have jammed another 32,500 pages for various offences. In 2007, YouTube was blocked for several months.

Thai-Style democracy hahaha!

Even in China, it is hard to control the internet (this week, the country delayed plans to put internet filtering software into every computer). And compared with China’s sophisticated controls, Thai censorship is Firewall 101. It uses keyword searches to turn up suspect websites. Wily netizens will no doubt stay a step ahead of the censors, using proxies and other tools, as they do in China and Myanmar. Meanwhile, the government’s efforts to protect the good name of the king are not only damaging democracy but may even rebound upon the royal reputation.

The government’s efforts??? Totally BS for me.

I’ve not heard the tape so can’t really comment.

Would like to recount this well-known tale – in the UK in 1977 punk rock pioneers the Sex Pistols released a song called God Save the Queen to mark her 25th jubilee. The lyrics to the song, in reference to the Queen, said there was “No Future in England’s dreaming” and called her a “moron” and said she wasn’t a human being, while the record’s cover artwork famously used a photo of the queen with a safety pin stuck through her nose.

To say this caused uproar would be an understatement. It was revolutionary and the newspapers and establishment reacted with complete outrage, particularly at a time when the nation was celebrating the Queen’s 25th year on the throne. The song went to number one in the charts even though all radio play was banned, the major shops refused to stock the record and most Sex Pistol’s concerts were stopped. The band’s members were attacked on the streets, being beaten and stabbed.

Did the monarchy tumble? No. Did UK society collapse? Not really. Did the Sex Pistols get 10years in prison? Nope.

The lesson is that democracies need to allow for outrageous things to be said if only to dissipate the tensions that exist in any society.

The bigger the clampdown, the bigger the reaction, the weaker a state or society appears.

The question is this – what really does Thai society have to fear from Daranee Charncherngsilpakul however unacceptable some people might find what she said?

Very little.

เพิ่มความน่าเชื่อถือว่าตัวผู้เขียนนั้นเป็น “เด็กรัฐศาสตร์”

ซึ่งเป็น discourse ธรรมดาของบรรดา elite ที่ธรรมดา ดูถูกคนอื่นยกหางตัวเองและผลงานโดยการบอกว่าตัวเองมีความรู้เรื่อง “รัฐศาสตร์” เป็นอย่างดีเพราะเป็น “เด็กรัฐศาสตร์”

แต่การพูด(เขียน)พล่อยๆ โดยการที่จะเชื่อมโยงว่่า รัฐบาลอภิสิทธิ์นั้นไม่ใช่ผลพวงจากการรัฐประหารเมื่อ 19 กันยา และยังมั่วซั่วไปโยงถึงรัฐบาลคึกฤทธิ้อีกด้วย โดยไม่พูดถึงบรรยากาศการเมืองในสมัยนั้นในปี 2518 (ผู้เขียนมั่วว่า 19) ว่าเป็นช่วงระหว่างหลัง 14 ตุลา และ ก่อน 6 ตุลา

ถ้าต้องการจะเสนอข้อมูลในนามของ “เด็กรัฐศาสตร์” ก็ไม่ควรทำแบบมักง่ายให้ข้อมูลผิดๆ แล้วจูงใจคนอ่านว่าเป็นข้อมูลที่ถูกเพราะ “เด็กรัฐศาสตร์” เขียนเอง
